Summer and Winter eagles in KUHMO
In May 1989 Lassi Rautiainen secured pictures of three white-tailed eagles in. At the time this was sensational! These days, around 30 eagles per year visit his “studio”. The best time to see them is October to May. In October to November and March to April they move from/to their breeding area in the Russian White Sea area. When the temperature falls to -20/-30 Celsius, the white-tailed eagles move south. In March, the first migrating white-tailed eagles come back again. During the last years there has been some white tailed eagles the staying whole summer.
Near the Wildlife Lassi Rautiainen “studio” in Kuhmo, there is a nesting pair of the more indigenous golden eagle, which can survive extremely cold conditions. The best months for golden eagles are November to April. One to four golden eagles remain during the coldest period from November to March for winter photography. There are around 400 nesting pairs in the country.
