Capercaillie and Black Grouse in Kuhmo
At the end of April or beginning of May, the capercaillie and black grouse engage in their mating displays in the boreal forest (capercaillies 20 April – 31 May and black grouse even earlier). They display close to our Kuikka base camp. Photography takes place from small hides and/or tents. Since the birds gather in the early morning, photographers need to enter the hide the previous evening. At that time, there might be a snowfall or sunshine, the weather being unpredictable and sometimes creating special effects.
Combine your bird trip with observing bears, wolves, wolverines, golden eagles, white-tailed eagles, cranes, whooper swans, and other aquatic birds, or photo hiking in old forest areas.
